WOWOW ( Japanese ワ ウ ワ ウ , Wauwau ) was the first private, paid satellite broadcast program in Japan and began broadcasting on April 1, 1991. Since December 1, 2000, the first channels have been broadcast digitally in HD .
success
After the first year (1992), the radio program was able to win over 200,000 paying customers. In 1994 the number rose to over 2.5 million. Since then, WOWOW has been one of the leading TV providers in Japan.
program
WOWOW mainly broadcasts films as well as American series such as Friends , CSI , Sex and the City or Cold Case - No victim is ever forgotten . But programs such as Ultimate Fighting Championship events were also included in the program.
Until 2007, the station was also known for broadcasting anime series such as The Big O , Brain Powerd , Cowboy Bebop and Ergo Proxy . Due to the loose standards for satellite television, the company can offer series that are aimed primarily at older viewers and, due to their content, would not be shown by other stations without editing. Due to the many contracts with anime production studios, including Studio Madhouse , the radio program is particularly popular among anime fans and is also known as the " otaku channel".
