The area was first settled in 1861 by Robert Standley , a European. Wudinna was named a city in 1916. The place is in the so-called Granite Land and tourists travel to the area with its granite elevations , Ucontitchie Hill , Mount Wudinna and Turtle Rock . Due to weathering, interesting granite forms have formed in the park landscapes surrounding the city, which can be hiked on paths. Granite has been quarried on a large scale at Mount Wudinna since 1990, which is not only used in Australia, but also exported to Asia and Europe. Mount Wudinna is about 12 kilometers northeast of the city and is the second largest monolith in Australia after Mount Augustus .
From Wudinna the Gawler Ranges National Park or a little further away Pinkawillinie Conservation Park can be reached. The place has accommodation (hotels, motel and caravan park) and shopping facilities, a hospital and a cultural center, the Gawler Ranges Cultural Center , in which Aboriginal works of art are exhibited. There is an airport near the city.
