Wulf Schiefenhövel
Wulf Schiefenhövel (born October 2, 1943 in Siegen ) is a German physician , anthropologist and human ethologist . He has been doing research for a long time at what is now the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology , the former Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology .
Life
Schiefenhövel attended the humanistic branch of the municipal high school in Siegen from 1954 to 1963 . He then studied medicine in Munich and Erlangen from 1963 to 1969 as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . In 1965 and 1966 he was in New Guinea for the first time as part of a field study on traditional medical beliefs and practices , making him one of the co-founders of ethnomedical research in Germany.
In 1970 he passed his medical state examination at the University of Erlangen and obtained his doctorate in the same year. med. with a thesis on ethnomedical investigations among the Kaluli and Waragu in New Guinea. In 1984 he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich for medical psychology and ethnomedicine and was appointed private lecturer. In 1988/1989 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and from 1995/1996 a fellow at the Collegium Budapest .
Schiefenhövel was a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal Homo from 1994 to 2005 , and is co-founder and co-editor of the journal Curare - journal for ethnomedicine and transcultural psychiatry. He has co-organized numerous conferences and meetings.
Schiefenhövel co-founded the Human Sciences Center at the University of Munich . Since 1997 he also taught at the University of Groningen and since 1990 together with Gerhard Medicus Human Ethology at the University of Innsbruck .
Scholarships and Memberships
He has received funding from the German Research Foundation, the Volkswagenwerk Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, among others. He is a member of numerous professional societies and committees, he has been Vice President of the Society for Anthropology (GfA) since 2005 , from 1992 to 2000 he was a member of the advisory board of the German Hygiene Museum, Dresden, since 2000 he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Werner- Reimers Foundation , Bad Homburg.

Schiefenhövel is the author of more than 250 articles. He has also been responsible for 24 books as an author or editor. His main areas of research are human ethology , the anthropology of cultures in Papua and Austronesia , and evolutionary psychiatry.
