Xá Cassau (also Xa-Cassau , Chá-Cassau and variants) is a city and a municipality in Angola .

history

The village was founded in the 19th century under Portuguese colonial administration and was named Elias Garcia, after the Portuguese journalist, military engineer, republican politician and Freemason José Elias Garcia (1830-1891).

After Angola's independence in 1975, the Portuguese place name was replaced by the current name.

administration

Xá-Cassau is the seat of a municipality of the same name (Comuna) in the district ( Município ) of Lucapa in the province of Lunda Norte . The community has around 12,000 inhabitants (2011 estimate). Only after all data from the 2014 census have been evaluated will reliable population data be available.

A total of 34 localities are in the municipality. In addition to the main town Xá-Cassau, these are mainly Catoca, Chapa, Chilimbica, Luô, Luxico, Mutuoa and Samulembe.

health

As part of the state reconstruction after the end of the Angolan civil war in 2002, the municipality of Xá-Cassau was also equipped with the first health care facilities. The hospital in the district town of Lucapa now maintains health stations in all four district communities. There are health stations in the municipality of Xá-Cassau, one in its main town and one in the town of Chapa. After only seven doctors were working in the entire Lucapa district in 2012, eleven more were hired as a first step in order to have doctors on site in the health stations outside the district hospital.

economy

The community is strongly characterized by agriculture. However, production suffers severely from a lack of equipment and the weak organization of small farmers in cooperatives . The poor road conditions also make any economic activity difficult. The first relief was the opening of two metal bridges in 2011 that cross the Txicapa and Tembo rivers and simplify the direct connection to the district town of Lucapa via the district road.
