Lucapa (also Lukapa ) is a city and district in northeast Angola . It was the capital of the Lunda Norte province until 2013 .

Lucapa district has around 179,000 inhabitants (2019 estimate). The 2014 census showed 154,305 inhabitants. Due to the Angolan civil war (1975-2002) and forced resettlements, as well as expulsions, significant population fluctuations were recorded.

Lucapa is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Lunda Norte . The district has an area of ​​17,500 km².

Four municipalities (Comunas) make up the Lucapa district:

• Capaia
• Lucapa
• Xá Cassau

economy

There are diamond deposits in the area which are mined by the Sociedade Mineira do Lucapa Lda in the Lulo mine . It is the mine with the largest diamonds ever found in Angola. In 2016, a 404- carat diamond was discovered which was sold for $ 16 million to a Swiss company owned by Isabel dos Santos . After being cut, it was auctioned by Christie's for $ 34 million . In February 2017 a diamond of 227 carats was found again in the mine, in February 2019 one of 128 carats. By mid-May 2019, 13 diamonds over 100 carats had already been discovered there. According to a study, there are diamond deposits of over 80,000 carats. The company plans to establish Angola's first diamond cutting factory in Lucapa.

The provincial administration is also keen to increase agricultural production around Lucapa in order to fight poverty and hunger in the region. For this purpose, a total of 15 hectares of land were given to 55 cooperatives in 2016. In the Município, 22 tons of cassava, the main agricultural product of the area, along with sweet potatoes and yams are already grown on 21,000 hectares of agricultural land .
