Chitato is a small town and county in northeastern Angola .

Chitato is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Lunda Norte . The district has around 226,500 inhabitants (2019 estimate). The 2014 census showed 195,136 inhabitants.

The provincial capital Dundo is one of the villages in the district .

Three municipalities (Comunas) make up the Chitato district:

economy

The mining of diamonds is of national importance in the district. The diamonds mined here by the state Endiama contributed around 3% to Angola's national budget. The fertile soils of the relatively water-rich region also allow diverse agriculture.
