Dundo is the capital of the Angolan province of Lunda Norte . The Dondo Museum is known nationwide.

history

The pygmy peoples originally living here were finally displaced by Bantu by 400 AD .

After diamonds were found in the region in 1912, Diamang was founded in 1917 . The diamond company founded the village of Dundo with the establishment of accommodation and the first administrative facilities. After Angola's independence in 1975, the government gained control of the diamond areas in Lunda in the course of the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002) in 1986 and replaced the former Diamang with the state-owned company Endiama . As early as 1978, the former Lunda district was divided into the present-day Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul provinces, and Lucapa became the capital of the Lunda Norte province. In 2009, the implementation of plans to develop Dundo into the capital of the province began. In 2013, Dundo replaced Lucapa as the provincial seat of government. The construction of 20,000 apartments is to be realized in four construction phases. At the end of 2014, 5000 of them were completed.

The Dundo Museum

On an initiative of the Diamang management in 1936 and based on the collection of the Angola expert José Redinha, the Museu Etnológico was founded in Dundo in 1942 , which was dedicated to the history and culture of the ethnic groups in eastern Angola. It also houses the 1018 objects of the ethnographic collection from Southwest Angola of the ethnologist Hermann Baumann , which he acquired during his research trip in 1954. After independence in 1975, the museum became the property of the Angolan government in 1976.

In the course of the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002), the museum experienced severe neglect, so that it had to be closed in 2004. Renovation and restructuring work followed, financed by the state-owned diamond company Endiama and in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, the provincial government of Lunda Norte and the Portuguese University of Coimbra , among others. a. In August 2012 the museum reopened as Museu Regional do Dundo .

It is particularly known for its collection of objects from the Lunda and Chokwe ethnicities. The mask of the Mwana Pwo (Young Woman) is considered to be the greatest attraction among the 10,000 pieces. But also the regional prehistory , the historical connection of the region to diamond mining, and the repression during the Portuguese colonial administration are the subject of the twelve different permanent exhibitions of the museum. Temporary exhibitions are shown in the other two of the fourteen exhibition rooms.
