Camissombo (also Kamissombo ) is a small town and a municipality in Angola .

history

Under Portuguese colonial administration , the village was elevated to a small town ( Vila ). It was called Vila Veríssimo Sarmento, named after the Portuguese colonial administrator Veríssimo de Gouveia Sarmento (1850-1907).

After Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975 , the Portuguese place name was replaced by its current name.

administration

Camissombo is the seat of a municipality of the same name (Comuna) of the district ( Município ) of Lucapa in the province of Lunda Norte . The municipality of Camissombo covers an area of 1080 km² and has 5075 inhabitants (2014 estimate). Reliable population data will only be available after the 2014 census has been completed.

In addition to the main town of Camissombo, there are six villages in the municipality, including Muquita, where 340 civil war veterans live.

health

As part of the state reconstruction after the end of the Angolan civil war in 2002, the community of Camissombo was also equipped with the first health care facilities. The hospital in the district town of Lucapa now maintains a health station in all four district communities, including Camissombo, which also has an ambulance stationed there . After only seven doctors were working in the entire Lucapa district in 2012, eleven more were hired as a first step in order to have doctors on site in the health stations outside the district hospital.

Since December 2010 Camissombo has also had a public drinking water supply again. The facilities destroyed in the civil war (1975–2002) were rebuilt as part of the state program Água para todos ( Portuguese for: “Water for all”).

education

Camissombo has a primary school with six classrooms for a total of 270 students. Secondary schools are located in the district town of Lucapa.
