Xandra Schutte (2015)

Xandra Schutte (born July 15, 1963 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch journalist . She has been editor-in-chief of the weekly political magazine De Groene Amsterdammer since 2008 . Before that, she was also editor-in-chief of Vrij Nederland , a competitor of De Groene Amsterdammer , and in this position the first woman in the Netherlands to head such a magazine.

Life

Schutte studied Dutch studies and communication sciences at the University of Amsterdam , then worked for the literary magazine De Gids and was trained as an editor at De Groene Amsterdammer in 1990 . She turned down the offer to finally succeed Gerald Westerloo there in 1998 after a temporary editor-in-chief had been taken over for about a year. Schutte then moved to Vrij Nederland in July 1999 and took over the editor-in-chief there in October 2000 as the successor to Oscar Garschagen .

In the following year, under Schutte's direction, the magazine was redesigned more in the direction of an opinion paper, which, however, still could not completely stop the loss of circulation, even if it was significantly lower than at the time of its predecessor. In 2004 there was finally an uproar in the editorial team after an email that Schutte had sent to her editor, Hendrik Jan Schoo , in which she had given ten editors a bad name, leaked. This was taken by the editorial staff as a request for an editorial reorganization; In addition, the incident was burdened by the fact that Schutte had entered into a relationship with Schoo. Due to the majority distrust the editors across from her she left then Vrij Nederland and was then deputy editor at the lifestyle magazine La Vie en Rose , her successor at Vrij Nederland took Emile Fallaux . In 2005 Schutte became deputy director at the JM Meulenhoff publishing house . At the beginning of 2007 she also became an author for the newly founded magazine Opinio . After turning down the editor-in-chief of De Groene Amsterdammer ten years earlier , she decided at the beginning of 2008 to accept the appointment as Hubert Smeets' successor.

In addition to her work as a journalist, Schutte has also appeared as an author of books in which she dealt with the lesbian language code ( Lesbiaans: lexicon van de lesbotaal ), lesbian Dutch literature ( Damesliefde ) and the identity of female writers ( Masquerade ).

Schutte is the mother of a son from her relationship with Schoo, who died in 2007.
