Xaver Kugler

Xaver Kugler (born December 1, 1922 in Augsburg ; † June 30, 2005 ) was a German journalist and editor-in-chief of the newspaper Der Demokratie from 1953 to 1988.

Xaver Kugler attended elementary school in Opladen until 1937 and completed an apprenticeship in business until 1941. After the Reich Labor Service in 1941/1942 he took part in World War II as a soldier, in 1944 he was promoted to sergeant and later as platoon leader to lieutenant.

When Kugler was released from captivity in 1945, he began a traineeship in the local editorial office of the CDU organ, Der Demokratie . In 1947 he joined the CDU. From 1948 to 1950 Kugler was editor at the Märkische Union , until 1951 even its editor-in-chief. He moved to the editorial office of the Berlin evening newspaper Nacht-Express as deputy head of department . After they were discontinued in April 1953, the CDU Political Committee gave him the "Democrat" editor-in-chief with effect from June 1, 1953 (successor to the incumbent editor-in-chief Fritz Zanger). Kugler was also a member of the secretariat of the CDU district council in Rostock.

On the occasion of his 60th birthday in 1982, the CDU chairman Gerald Götting paid special tribute to his almost 30 years of activity as editor-in-chief of the district newspaper “Der Demokratie”: “The newspaper that you run has played an important role in promoting socialist awareness among our members Party in the northern districts of Rostock, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg and the civic thinking and action of many Christian citizens without a party ”.

On January 7, 1988, after 35 years at the helm of the CDU district newspaper, he retired as the senior editor-in-chief of the GDR.

Kugler was awarded the Franz Mehring badge of honor in 1966 , the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in 1977 and in silver in 1982 and in 1987 received the Order of the Banner of Labor , Level I.
