Xcelerator is a steel roller coaster ( Launched Coaster ) in the American amusement park Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park (near Los Angeles ). The track was opened on June 22nd, 2002. Xcelerator was designed by Intamin .
journey
Xcelerator uses a hydraulic acceleration system to accelerate the trains from 0 to 132 km / h in 2.3 seconds. At the end of the acceleration section, the train travels vertically to a maximum height of 62.5 m, where it travels over the top of the element called the top hat .
Sometimes the train doesn't make the top hat and the train rolls back , with the train going backwards to the station. For safety reasons, there are retractable brakes that stop the train in the event of a rollback. However, such a rollback is very rare.
Even if it rains a little, the track is closed. This is a recommendation from the manufacturer. Before the roller coaster can be reopened, it has to withstand a few test drives without a problem.
Trains
Xcelerator has two trains with five cars each. Four people (two rows of two people) can be seated in each car. This enables a maximum capacity of 1330 people per hour. Lap bars are used as a restraint system.
Relationship with Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster
Xcelerator was one of the first accelerator coasters with a tophat. She was the model for Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster . Kingda Ka is twice as high and about 1.5 times as fast as Xcelerator, which means it holds two world records (one of which is still current), but the driving principle is exactly the same.
accident
On September 16, 2009 the steel cable of the catapult system tore when a train was shot down. A 12 year old boy and his father were injured by debris in the accident. The roller coaster remained closed until April 26, 2010.
