Xenia Vladimirovna Chwostova

Xenija Wladimirowna Chwostowa ( Russian Ксения Владимировна Хвостова ; born June 5, 1934 ) is a Soviet - Russian Byzantinist .

Life

Chwostowa's father was the modern historian Vladimir Mikhailovich Chwostow (1905–1972). Her grandfather Michail Michailowitsch Chwostow (1872-1920) was an ancient historian , while her great-uncle Weniamin Michailowitsch Chwostow (1868-1920) was a philosopher and sociologist .

Chwostowa studied at the Lomonosov University Moscow (MGU) in the historical faculty (IstFak) with a degree in 1957. She then became a research assistant at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR).

Chwostova's areas of interest were and are the history of the Byzantine Empire , the methodology of historical science and philosophy . In 1965 she successfully defended her dissertation on the peculiarities of agricultural law in late Byzantium for her doctorate as a candidate in the history of science. When in 1968 the Institute of History of the USSR and the Institute of General History of the AN-SSSR emerged from the Institute of History of the AN-SSSR , Chvostova became the chief scientific officer and head of the Center for Problems of Historical Knowledge of the Institute of General History of the AN- SSSR.

Chwostowa was also interested in mathematics and completed a correspondence course in the mathematics department of the economic faculty of the MGU with graduation in 1972 in order to be able to carry out her investigations with more precise methods. In 1981 she successfully defended her doctoral thesis on the theoretical-quantitative approach to medieval social and economic history using Byzantine material for a doctorate in historical sciences . She also examined how the Byzantine contemporaries understood the socio-economic processes of the time. Together with Viktor Konstantinowitsch Finn , she analyzed the gnoseological and logical problems of historical science and the problems of historical knowledge in the light of modern interdisciplinary research. Her focus remained the peculiarities of the Byzantine civilization , for which she received the Karejew Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2006 .
