Xenosmilus is a saber-toothed cat from the Lower Pleistocene of North America. Fossils of this genus , about the size of today's lion , are more than a million years old. So far, only two partial skeletons from Florida are known.

Until the genus was described, only two species of saber-toothed cats were known from the Lower Pleistocene of North America. The smaller, compact species Smilodon gracilis and the larger, slimmer species Homotherium serum , which, in contrast to Smilodon, also had shorter, more flattened saber teeth. Finds of a cat that combined characteristics of the two genera Homotherium and Smilodon led to the description of the new genus Xenosmilus . So far only the type species X. hodsonae is known.

The discoverer of Xenosmilus is the fossil collector John B. Babiarz from Mesa (Arizona) . The type epithet "hodsonae" refers to his wife Debra L. Hodson.

In terms of tribal history, Xenosmilus belongs just like Homotherium to the group of Homotherini. However, compared to the other genera of this group, it had stronger, shorter legs that are more reminiscent of those of Smilodon . Strongly jagged, relatively short saber teeth and a robust body were also typical.
