Xoops (own notation: XOOPS ) is a free portal - software that many elements of a web content management system includes (CMS). Xoops emerged as a spin-off from PHP-Nuke and, like this one, is based on the PHP programming language and the MySQL database management system and is subject to the GNU General Public License .

history

Xoops was founded by Ono Kazumi ( Onokazu ) from Japan . Development of the system began in 2001; Version 1.0 ( Release Candidate 1) was published on January 1, 2002. Since 2007 the Chinese Taiwen Jiang has been primarily responsible for the project.

Xoops has been recommended as a CMS and portal system in various magazines and portals. The Edge newsletter from Adobe Inc., for example, in its April 2008 issue rated the three systems Drupal , Joomla and Xoops as ideal for setting up e-commerce sites. In the Open Source CMS Awards published annually by the British publisher Packt , Xoops regularly achieves one of the top five places.

Xoops successfully participated in Asian open source competitions several times and won the grand prize of the Open Source Software Challenge in Korea in 2009 .

description

The term Xoops stands for eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System , English for "expandable, object-oriented portal system". Xoops makes it easy to manage complex websites . The basic system itself offers one with modules scalable framework with multi- user management . The design and layout can be adapted using the integrated Smarty template engine or using the layout templates that are already available. Xoops are mainly used in online communities ; However, Xoops can also meet the requirements of a classic content management system. Xoops is not optimized directly for web designers. Although Xoops uses a template engine with which in principle everything can be adapted, there are only a few outstanding pre-made layout templates for Xoops.

Xoops can be expanded by so-called modules with additional functions such as guest books , forums , wikis and much more. With the introduction of version 2.3, the two versions 2.0 and 2.2 were reunited into one version. However, due to the changeover to UTF-8, not all modules have yet been converted or adapted.

Spin-offs

Xoops started as a spin-off from PHP-Nuke and itself spawned spin-offs, including:
