Yéle Haiti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yéle Haiti ( Screams Haiti ) is a non-profit organization founded by the American musician, songwriter and producer Wyclef Jean , which promotes projects to improve the quality of life in Haiti , especially the youth. Seat of Yéle Haiti is New York City .

target

Yéle Haiti aims to create manageable but effective projects by combining music and development, and to support the long-term development of Haiti.

"The objective of Yéle Haiti is to restore pride and a reason to hope, and for the whole country to regain the deep spirit and strength that is part of our heritage." - Wyclef Jean

Projects

The aim of every Yéle project is to create a new, forward-thinking Haiti. In cooperation with local organizations, environmental camps are carried out for schoolchildren, sporting activities are promoted for young people, the reintegration of young gang members is supported and food is distributed in the slums.

Reactions

In January 2006, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visited Wyclef in Haiti .

In 2006, Yéle founder Wyclef Jean was named Ambassador of Goodwill for his country. As the Haitian Presidency announced, "the internationally recognized personality will put his reputation and charisma at the service of his country free of charge".

In the context of the earthquake disaster in 2010 , after which Yéle also called for donations, there were some serious allegations against the organization and against Jean. The American magazine Smoking Gun accused Yéle of having delayed tax returns and improperly transferring donations to companies that belonged to Yéle employees. Part of the money is said to have flowed into projects from which the singer personally benefited. Jean and Yéle board members Hugh Locke have now admitted to have made "administrative mistakes", but deny the charge of personal gain.
