Yō Gotō

Yō Gotō ( Japanese 後 藤 洋 , Gotō Yō ; * 1958 in Akita , Akita Prefecture ) is a Japanese composer and music teacher .

He studied music at Yamagata University in Yamagata , Japan . He completed his studies in composition at Tokyo College of Music with Shinichiro Ikebe and Kaneda Shigenari and at the University of North Texas with Cindy McTee .

He composed and arranged many school and educational works. He is also active as a music critic and musicologist . His compositions are known not only in Japan, but also in the USA and Europe. He is a sought-after and valued lecturer at workshops and band clinics , with musicologists, conductors and international brass music associations. In particular, his pedagogical skills are repeatedly praised and highlighted. His compositions have been nominated and specified several times as compulsory pieces for wind orchestra competitions in Japan, the USA and Europe. In 2011 Gotō received the Sousa / ABA / Ostwald Award from the American Bandmasters Association for his work Songs for Wind Ensemble .

He is a board member of the Academic Society for Winds, Percussion and Band in Japan and an advisor to the Japan Band Clinic Committee .
