His artistic oeuvre includes, among other things: paintings with ink and various colors, book illustrations, room installations. He is best known for sculptures made from rusty iron. Life

When Dorchin was born, Haifa was part of the British Mandate of Palestine . He has been painting in Hadar HaCarmel since he was a child . He later lived in Kibbutz Ramat David . As a child, Dorchin was interested in all living things and collected animals. He said he would later become a biologist, but later became more interested in the aesthetics of nature and art. After his military service he worked in the port of Haifa, in agriculture, in a copper mine and as a fisherman. But he always drew and painted intensively in his free time. His development as an artist was not a specific decision, but the result of his personal development. In 1972 it burned in his studio in Kibbutz Kfar Hahoresh. As a result, he gave up painting for a while and finally turned more to sculpture.

Angel by Y. Dorchin (1993)

Dorchin has lived in Kibbutz Kfar HaHoresh west of Nazareth since 1967, where he has a studio. Dorchin represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1990. There he met Eduardo Chillida and Anthony Caro , who inspired him. He was also influenced by his acquaintance with Joseph Beuys . Some of his sculptures are also in the spirit of Constantin Brâncuși .

Dorchin was a professor at the Faculty of Art at Haifa University from 1991 . From 1997 to 2002 he was head of the faculty. In 2011 he was honored with the Israel Prize , the highest honor in the State of Israel. Since 2015 he has been the head of the Basis School of Arts, Herzliya.

Dorchin as an entomologist

Dorchin is also active as an entomologist and works on longhorn beetles with a focus on Africa and the Near and Middle East. He also works on the local fauna of Israel. Dorchin has produced a number of scientific publications. For Dorchin, the beetles were always a source of inspiration, but also a way to get away from the sculptural work.

Art exhibitions

Dorchin has exhibited in many galleries and museums in Israel, especially many times in the Gordon Gallery Tel Aviv. But his works have also been shown in New York, Tokyo, Liège (Belgium) and other cities, for example. In 2005, together with Yosef Schlein , he set up a highly acclaimed exhibition in the Munich State Zoological Collection . In 2009 a major retrospective was shown at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art . A selection of his exhibitions can be found on the Gordon Gallery website.
