Yamamoto is an impact crater in the northern hemisphere on the far side of the moon and therefore cannot be directly observed from Earth. It is located south-southwest of the Avogadro crater , to which the Tikhov crater adjoins to the east . To the south is the great D'Alembert crater .

Like many other craters on the back of the moon, Yamamoto is badly pitted from impacts. The rim of the crater is covered in several places by younger impact craters and almost completely erased in the northeastern part. The crater floor in the north-eastern area is relatively flat and without any particular characteristics, while the south-western part is much more uneven. This difference is likely due to ejecta from one of the surrounding craters.
