Yamanoue stone monument

Yamanoue no hi ( Japanese 山 ノ 上 碑 ; Yamanoue hi , German 'Yamanoue stone monument') is a natural stone made of pyroxene - andesite with a height of 1.11 m, a width of 47 to 50 cm and a thickness of approx. 50 cm. It is believed that the stone monument was erected in 681 during the reign of Temmu -tennō. On the front it shows a text of 53 characters, which are arranged in four vertical lines. The stone monument is located in Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture , Japan . It belongs with the Tago stone monument and the Kanaizawa stone monument to the "three stone monuments of Kōzuke" ( mit 野 三 碑 Kōzuke sanpi ) and it is the oldest of the three stone monuments. The stone monument was declared a special historical site on October 5, 1954, together with the neighboring Kofun of the same name .

overview

Imitation of the stone monument

The stone itself is only slightly worked and is reminiscent of stone monuments from Silla , on the Korean mainland. The inscription is engraved in the Reisho style with a V-shaped profile. The inscription is believed to be an epitaph from the neighboring round kofun. The text shows that the stone monument was erected by a monk of the Hōkō Temple named Chōri, head of the Miyake family ( 屯 倉 ), for his late mother Kurome-toji. However, recent excavation results make it very likely that the stone monument comes from the Sannohaiji Temple ( 山 王 廃 寺 跡 ) in Maebashi . The origin of the monk on the father's and mother's side is also indicated on the stone.
