Yanesha 'children

The Yanesha , also called Amueshas , are an ethnic group in the rainforests of Peru . They live around 400 km north-east of Lima in an area in the Huánuco region , the Chanchamayo province and the Oxapampa province . In 2010, UNESCO recognized the Oxapampa-Ashaninka-Yanesha nature reserve in the “Selva Central” region as a biosphere reserve .

language

Their language is one of the Arawak languages and is spoken by around 9830 people (as of 2000). More recent counts still assume 7,000 people. In 1997 a book on grammar was published in Spanish and in 1998 a dictionary (Amuesha - Spanish).

Culture and society

The most important organizational unit in this tribe is the extended family. The Yanesha 'have an extremely large amount of traditional knowledge about medicinal plants and herbal medicine . In 2008 an international study was published with a description and examination of around 300 medicinal plants of the Yanesha '. The Yanesha 'consider nature, and especially plants, to be animated and worship them as gods of nature .

The Yanesha 'are also known by the following names: Amage, Amagues, Amaje, Amajo, Amoishe, Amueixa, Amuese, Amuesha, Amuetamo, Lorenzo and Omage.
