Waist drum

Waist drum ( Chinese  腰鼓 , Pinyin yāogǔ ) is a double-headed tube drum played in East Asia with a cylindrical, barrel-shaped or hourglass-shaped body. The length is usually about 35 cm. On the body there are two metal rings with which it is attached to the belt and hangs from the hip. It is struck with wooden mallets held in both hands to accompany dances.

The waist drum dance ( yaoguwu ) from Ansai County in Shaanxi Province ( Ansai yaogu , 安塞 腰鼓) is on the list of the intangible cultural heritage of the People's Republic of China .
