Yaron Silberberg (born 1951 in Giv'atajim ; died April 21, 2019 ) was an Israeli physicist at the Weizmann Institute who studied nonlinear optics , integrated optics , optical solitons, and optical communication technology, and physics with ultrashort laser pulses .

Life

Silberberg studied physics at the University of Tel Aviv with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and at the Weizmann Institute with a master's degree in applied physics in 1975 and a doctorate in 1984. In between he did research with the Israeli army from 1975 to 1979. From 1985 to 1994 he was with Bellcore in Red Bank, New Jersey. In 1994 he became Associate Professor and in 1999 Professor at the Weizmann Institute in the Department of Physics of Complex Systems, which he headed from 1999 to 2002. From 2002 to 2008 he was dean of physics and since 2008 he has headed the Crown Photonics Center at the Weizmann Institute. He was there Harry Weinrebe Professor for Laser Physics .

His group investigated models of periodic and disordered systems, such as those found in solid state physics, with systems of optical waveguides, whereby interactions are represented by nonlinearities in optics and the quantum properties by studying individual photons in such systems. In 2008 they represented Anderson localization in this way. They used ultrashort laser pulses for new types of scanning laser microscopy (Third-Harmonic Generation Microscopy (1997), Single-pulse CARS microscopy (2002), Temporal Focusing Microscopy (2005)). In quantum optics, his group demonstrated the manipulation of the time course of individual photons (2005) and the application and generation of Schrödinger-Katzen states and NOON states . He also dealt with quantum control , that is, the selective excitation or amplification of multiphoton processes with the help of specially shaped femtosecond laser pulses.

In 1990 he demonstrated light bullets , the spatiotemporal collapse of laser pulses. and developed optical switches for digital optical information processing in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and became a 1991 Fellow of the Optical Society of America . In 2013 he received the Max Born Award , in 2018 the Rothschild Prize .
