Yermo is a parish in San Bernardino County , California . It is located approximately 13 miles east of the city of Barstow in the Mojave Desert and has a direct connection to Interstate 15 . In 2009 the population was around 2000.

economy

The opening of California Interstate 15 in 1968 presented the city with unimagined problems, as the traditionally heavy traffic to and from Las Vegas in the state of Nevada no longer ran through the city, but instead was guided past it on the freeway. As a result, most local shops were no longer able to operate successfully and had to be closed. Before the opening, there were 27 petrol stations, seven bars, three motels as well as several restaurants and campsites in Yermo. By 2009 that number had dropped to four gas stations, one bar and three restaurants. The only motel is about a mile outside of town. Yermo is known for the Del Taco fast food chain , which opened its first restaurant here in 1964 and is now the second largest chain in the USA.

In the middle of the 20th century, the local Chamber of Commerce established Yermo as the Gateway to the Calicos , in German the gateway to the Calicos . This refers to both California's Calico Mountains and the nearby ghost town of Calico . Together with the city of Barstow, a county park was planned and built, which is still very successful today and has been one of the attractions of Southern California since Walter Knott renovated the ghost town in 1952, over 40 years after its abandonment, and handed it over to San Bernardino County.

Yermo has a delivery post office that does not offer direct delivery to addresses. There is also a 7.5 square kilometer industrial warehouse at the United States Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow in the village .

politics

Due to its size, the village does not have its own city administration, but is administered by a five-person management committee of the county, which also provides community services for the administrative district. This committee meets once a month and is responsible for the Yermo / Calico volunteer fire brigade, as well as the operation of the street lighting, the public parks and the drinking water supply.

Public facilities

The local and regional schools are organized and run by the Silver Valley Unified School District , or SVUSD for short. The school system corresponds to K-12 , in which kindergartens and all school classes up to 12th grade are run together.

In addition, there were three churches in Yermo in 2009; one baptist and two non-denominational.
