Yi (Ji Jian, Zhou King)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yi , King of Zhou ( Chinese : 周 懿王; Pinyin : Zhōu Yì Wáng , often also written Yih to distinguish it from King Yi ) was the seventh king of the Chinese Zhou dynasty . He ruled from 899 BC. BC to 873 BC Chr.

Life

Along with Gong , Xiao and Yi, Yi is one of those kings whose reigns very little is known. The Shiji Chronicle notes that under Yi the Zhou royal family was in decline and that poets wrote satires about the kings. The bamboo annals report that a solar eclipse occurred in the first year of Yi's reign (most likely April 21, 899 BC). Attacks by the Rong and Di on the heartland of the Zhou Empire have been recorded for the 7th and 13th years of Yi's reign . A failed Zhou counter-attack is recorded for the 21st year.

The chronicles say that King Yi left Zongzhou in his 15th year of reign and went to Huaili. He was probably forced to flee by his uncle, who came to the throne as King Xiao .
