Thing yi

Ding Yi (born January 14, 1959 in Shanghai , China ) is an Austrian table tennis player . Since the mid-1980s he has been one of the top players in Austria.

Career in Austria

The penholder player Ding Yi came to Europe in 1982 and then from the Italian club Vita San Elpidio to Austria in the mid-1980s, where he first joined the Raiffeisen Kuchl club and then Union Wolkersdorf. In August 1987 he received Austrian citizenship, which entitled him to start in the national team . At that time he was the strongest player in the country. From 1988 to 1994 he was national champion in individual seven times in a row before he was replaced by Werner Schlager in 1995 . In 1992 and 1993 he won the team championship with Langenlois.

In 1988 and 1990 he was nominated for the European Championship . He won bronze in mixed with Bulgarian Daniela Gergeltschewa in 1990 . From 1989 to 2000 he took part in seven world championships , from 1988 he was represented at four Olympiads.

At the Senior World Championships in 2006 he won bronze in the age group over 40 in doubles with Roland Böhm, in 2008 and 2010 he was senior world champion in singles in the classes over 40 and over 50. In 2009 and 2015 he was also senior European champion in the men's singles over 50s, 2011 and 2013 vice European champion.

Time in Germany and Switzerland

1996 moved to the German Bundesliga for TTC Frickenhausen . With this club he became German runner-up in 1998/99. As a top player, he was instrumental in this success with a positive 7: 5 balance. In 2000 he was signed by the TTC Rhön-Sprudel Fulda-Maberzell before he returned to Austria in the State League A in Wolkersdorf in 2002. Then he played at Mauthausen in the Austrian Bundesliga. Ding Yi has been playing at TTC Baar in Switzerland since the 2016/17 season .

Private

Ding Yi is a trained export merchant. He is married and has two sons.
