Yi Gang (Chinese: 易 纲; pinyin: Yì Gāng; * 1958 in Beijing ) is a Chinese economist and, since 2018, governor of the Chinese People's Bank , the central bank of the People's Republic of China . He is also the former director of the state foreign exchange administration .

Career

Yi Gang studied at the University of Beijing , the Hamline University in Saint Paul ( Minnesota ) and received his doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Economics with a dissertation on selection methods for statistical models. He became an Associate Professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He then became a professor at the Faculty of Peking University, deputy director of the Center for Economics Research and lecturer in economics. Yi has published more than 40 articles in Chinese and 20 academic articles in English , which have appeared in various business journals.

He joined the Chinese People's Bank in 1997 and held various functions there. In December 2007 he was appointed Vice President of Volksbank. From 2009 until January 12, 2016, he was director of the state foreign exchange administration. In October 2016, Yi represented his country at the six-monthly meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, DC , including in a panel with the Governor of the Bank of England , Mark Carney . The meetings took place when the renminbi yuan was first added to the IMF's international currency basket in what is known as the Special Drawing Right .

In March 2018, Yi was appointed the new governor of the People's Bank of China, replacing Zhou Xiaochuan .
