Yirgacheffe (alternative spellings Yirga Cheffe , Irgachefe , Yergacheffe ; former name Finchoa or Finchawa ) is a city in southwest Ethiopia . It is located east of Lake Abaya and the Nechisar National Park and is the capital of the woreda Yirgacheffe within the Gedeo Zone in the region of the southern nations, nationalities and peoples . In 2005, Yirgacheffe had 20,979 inhabitants, according to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia .

In 1967 the population was 4,094, in 1984 it was around 8,300. In 1994 Yirgacheffe had 11,579 inhabitants, of which 23.13% Amharen , 23.09% Oromo , 16.27% Soddo-Gurage, 13.61% Gedeo , 7.94% Silt'e , 7.72% Sebat-Bet- Gurage and 1.74% was Welaytta . 63.07% spoke Amharic as their mother tongue, 11.59% Gedeo , 11.52% Oromo , 5.17% Soddo, 3.31% Silt'e and 2.86% Gurage.

Internationally, Yirgacheffe is best known for the coffee that is grown in the area.
