Yixianornis (义县鸟 ) is an extinct bird - genus from the Lower Cretaceous . Remains were found in the Jiufotang Formation near Chaoyang ( People's Republic of China ) and may therefore come from the lower Aptium (~ 120 Ma BP). Only one species is known to date , Yixianornis grabaui .

etymology

The word creation Yixianornis is derived from Yixian , literally Yi circle ( Chinese  义县 , Pinyin Yìxìan ), with the Yixian formation named after it and the ancient Greek όρνις (ornis) for bird. The species name grabaui goes back to the American paleontologist Amadeus William Grabau , who carried out field surveys in China in the early 20th century.

Systematics

Yixianornis was a close relative of Yanornis and Songlingornis . These three genera together form a taxon within early modern birds. They are very primitive birds, but already have an essentially modern pygostyle with a fan of tail feathers.
