Songlingornis (松岭鸟 ) is a prehistoric bird - species from the Cretaceous , the fossils in the Jiufotang Formation Liaoning ( People's Republic of China were found). The age of the bedrock is still controversial, but should be around 120 million years, i.e. H. lower aptium . So far only one species is known - Songlingornis linghensis .

etymology

The word creation Songlingornis is derived from the northeast-southwest-striking mountain range of the Songling and the ancient Greek όρνις (ornis) for bird. Songling means "back of the pine". The species name linghensis is based on the Ling He rivers Daling He (Big Ling He) and Xiaoling He (Little Ling He).

description

Songlornis was about the size of a sparrow. The holotype (IVPP number V.10913) is an incomplete skeleton with parts of the skull. Upper and lower jaws were narrow and elongated and covered with dense rows of teeth. The raven bone was well developed and the narrow forkbone extension was already similar to that of modern waterfowl.

Systematics

Songlingornis was a close relative of the Yanornis and Yixianornis , with whom together he formed a monophyletic group of early modern birds. Some researchers consider Songlingornithidae to be identical to the genus Yanornis (since Yanornis was only later described as Songlingornithidae , the taxon should consequently be called Songlingornithidae ). However, not all experts share this point of view.
