Yombe (people)

The term Yombe refers to several Bantu ethnic groups in the lower Congo and in Zambia . Their number is estimated at around 300,000 to 1,000,000. You speak Kiyombe ( ISO 639-3 ) and are known to be good woodworkers and artists.

Breakdown

The Mayombe or Bayombe live mainly north, partly also south of the confluence of the Congo in the region of the same name. They have matrilineal rules of descent .

Bayombe are also called the members of a small ethnic subgroup of the Tumbuka in the northern province of Zambia . The ethnic group counts 1,720 people and lives on the high plateau. Their dialect is called Chi Yombe and is closer to the languages ​​in the Eastern Province . The languages ​​of Senga, Tumbuka, Fungwe and Yombe differ only in nuances. The annual festival is Vinkhakanimba , which, as in all Zambian ethnic groups, is presided over by the chief.

The Mayombe live from farming in small fields and gardens in a hilly forest region. Bananas, corn, beans, cassava , peanuts and yams are grown .
