Leo Bittremieux
Leo Bittremieux (born 4. September 1880 in Sijsele , West Flanders , Belgium . Died 21st September 1946 in Boma , Belgian Congo ) was a Belgian Scheut - missionary , a member of that Roman Catholic male order Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary ( Latin: Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae; Order abbreviation: CICM). Through his missionary work in Africa he became an ethnologist and linguist.
Life
Bittremieux worked for some time in western Congo, in Mayombe Land , in a forest area of what was then the Belgian Congo , north of the Congo estuary . In addition to his missionary work, he also studied the people of the country from a sociological and anthropological perspective and he published a few things on the languages of Mayombe land. He turned against the efforts of his congregation for the popularization of the African lingála as the lingála language . During the First World War he worked as a chaplain in Cameroon for some time . Bittremieux collected ritual figures and objects from the Mayombe and used them in the collections of Belgian museums for many years .
Leo Bittremieux was the brother of the theologian Jozef Bittremieux .
