station
The station is in the median of Allen Road, a multi-lane feeder road to Highway 401 . It is named after the shopping center of the same name, which can be reached via a covered pedestrian bridge. The bridge also provides access to the Yorkdale Bus Terminal bus station ; There you can transfer to GO Transit bus routes to neighboring districts and to intercity buses from Ontario Northland and Greyhound. A second exit at the south end of the station leads to Ranee Avenue, where two bus routes run by the Toronto Transit Commission . In addition, there is a park-and-ride with 1,144 chargeable parking spaces available to commuters .
The station design comes from the renowned architect Arthur Erickson , who was awarded the Governor General's Architecture Prize in 1982. A curved glass roof extends the entire length of the platform. It ends symmetrically at the escalators and stairs at both ends, giving the impression of a dome. The concrete side walls have oval windows and are connected to the glass roof via the rails.
history
The station opened on January 28, 1978, along with the section between St. George and Wilson . In the first few years, the work of art Arc-en-ciel ( French : rainbow) by Michael Hayden adorned the station: A specially constructed computer system controlled 158 different colored gas discharge tubes that illuminated the glass roof and thus formed a kind of rainbow. The computer connected to the signaling system triggered a pulsing sequence when a train pulled in. Over time, the system proved too difficult to maintain, so the installation was removed in the early 1990s.
