Yoshiko Kira

Yoshiko Kira ( Japanese 吉 良 佳 子 , Kira Yoshiko ; born September 14, 1982 in Kōchi , Kōchi Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician of the Communist Party of Japan (CPJ) and has represented Tokyo in the Sangiin , the upper house of the Japanese Parliament , since 2013 .

After graduating from Waseda University , Kira initially worked for a printing company in Toshima . In the prefectural parliamentary election in Tokyo in 2009 , she ran for the CPJ in the three-mandate constituency of Toshima, but was subject to the three incumbents of DPJ , LDP and Kōmeitō with around 16% of the votes . She later worked as a secretary for the CPY Sangiin MP Tomoko Tamura .

In the 2013 Sangiin election , she ran in the five-seat constituency of Tokyo. It received 703,901 votes (12.5%) and thus the third highest percentage of votes. For the first time since 2001, the CPJ succeeded in gaining a seat in Tokyo. In 2019 she was able to defend her seat with 12.3% of the vote.

Kira's father Tomihiko is a member of the Kōchi Prefectural Parliament and a former member of the Kōchi City Council.
