Yossi Klein Halevi (born 1953 in USA) is an Israeli author and journalist .

biography

Halevi was born and raised in Borough Park, Brooklyn , New York to a Jewish family. His father was a Holocaust survivor born in Hungary . 1978 graduated Halevi a Bachelor in Jewish Studies at Brooklyn College and his Masters in Journalism at Northwestern University . Since 1982 he has lived in Israel with his wife Sarah (née Lynn Rintoul) .

Journalistic and literary career

Halevi worked as a writer on the biweekly magazine The Jerusalem Report from its inception until 2002. He wrote columns for The Jerusalem Post and was a regular contributor to Israeli topics in the comment section of the Los Angeles Times , occasionally writing for the New York Times and Washington Post . His first book, Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist , was published in 1995, in which he describes his dispute with Rabbi Meir Kahane .

In 2001 he published the book At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden: A Jew's Search for God with Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land, in which he reflected on his spiritual career as a religious Jew in the world of Christianity and Islam in Israel. Halevi took part in meditations and prayers in various monasteries to get to know their life and language.

Halevi was then a Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute , a study center in Jerusalem, and a correspondent for The New Republic . He is a lecturer at US and Canadian institutes, mainly dealing with issues of Israeli politics and culture. Since 2013 he has been teaching at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City.

Halevi's book Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided A Nation was published by HarperCollins in October 2013 .

Political work

Halevi was active in reconciliation research in the Middle East and is chairman of the Open House, an Arab-Jewish study project in Ramle . He was the founder and member of the former Israeli-Palestinian Media Forum, in which Palestinian and Jewish journalists collaborate and conduct research.

Movie

In 1985 the documentary Kaddish , produced by Steve Brand, was released, in which the relationship with his father, a Holocaust survivor, is reflected on film. The Village Voice newspaper named this film the best of the year.
