Life

He attended the "Emory and Henry College" in Washington County (Virginia) and the "Emory College" in Georgia . Both training centers were shaped by Methodism. Allen graduated in 1858 and married after selling both his lands and slaves . In 1860 he traveled to China as a missionary, where he settled in Shanghai. There he worked as a teacher and translator for Chinese authorities. His concern was to reduce the hostility between Chinese and western foreigners in the country through educational work. On his initiative several small schools, later the Anglo-Chinese College (today: Soochow University (Suzhou) ) were founded. At the turn of the century, Allen had made a name for himself in China and made a significant contribution to social change in China. Allen has translated several books into Chinese, was the editor of a Chinese daily newspaper and the author of several books.
