Ypané is a city and a district in the Central Department, 27 km from Asunción . It was founded on March 23, 1538 as a Franciscan reduction by Domingo Martínez de Irala . The name refers to the stream Ypané that crosses the district. The city has 12,400 inhabitants, the entire district about 52,700.

This is where the Battle of Ytororó in the Triple Alliance War took place on December 6, 1868 . In order to occupy a strategically important bridge over the Ytotoró, around 4,000 Paraguayan soldiers fought against 12,000 men of the opposing allies. In the end, the opposing troops who were able to advance to Villeta won . There were 1,484 injured and 285 dead among the Allies, 786 injured and 330 dead among the Paraguayans. A memorial was erected on the bank of the river to commemorate the bloody battle.
