Yrjö Edelmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yrjö Edelmann (born October 17, 1941 in Helsinki , † March 14, 2016 in Upplands-Bro ) was a Swedish painter and illustrator who became known for his realistic graphics and paintings of packages, napkins and wrapping paper.

Edelmann began his career as an illustrator at Åhlén & Åkerlund publishing in Stockholm . During a study trip to the USA he trained with the pop art painter James Rosenquist . This inspired nobleman to continue his very own path to a highly personal art form. In 1973 he exhibited for the first time.

Yrjö Edelmann mastered the trompe-l'œil ( French: deceive the eye ), an art form that tries to deceive the eye and should appear "real" to the viewer. Edelmann was obsessed with paper, often wrinkled and creased. His pictures are so seductively three-dimensional that you want to go over to touch a piece of string or tape that seems to be hanging out of the picture, only to find that the whole thing only happens in two dimensions and the eye has been deceived.

Yrjö Edelmann could refer to exhibitions in the USA, Japan, but also in many European countries.
