Ma Dexin

Yusuf Ma Dexin馬德 新 / 马德 新 (born 1794 ; died 1874 ) or Ma Fuchu马 复 初 (zi: Fuchu 复 初) was a Hui-Chinese scholar of Islam and religious leader in China . He was the first to translate the Koran into Chinese (Baoming zhenjing zhijie 寶 命 真經 直 解 / 宝 命 真经 直 解), of which only a part (5 juan ) has been preserved.

Together with Wang Daiyu (王 岱 舆 1570–1660), Liu Zhi (刘智 1660–1745) and Ma Zhu (马 注 1640–1711) he was one of the founders of the system of Islamic theology and philosophy in China.

He had a thorough knowledge of Arabic and Persian as well as Islam. He has also written various books on Islam in Arabic and Persian. In 1841 he made the pilgrimage ( Hajj ) to Arabia and then spent eight years in the Middle East. At the age of 80, he was executed in Yunnan by the Qing Dynasty government for participating in the Muslim rebellion, the Panthay Rebellion .
