The city of Yuyao ( 余姚 市 , Yúyáo Shì ) is an independent city in the sub-provincial city ​​of Ningbo in the east Chinese province of Zhejiang . It has an area of ​​1,527 km² and has a population of around 825,800 (2005).

The Hemudu site (Hemudu yizhi 河姆渡 遗址) - the eponymous site of the Neolithic Hemudu culture -, the former residence and tomb of Wang Shouren (Wang Shouren guju he mu 王守仁 故居 和 墓) and the former site of the East Zhejiang Base area in the Anti-Japanese War (1943) (Zhedong Kang-Ri genjudi jiuzhi 浙东 抗日 根据地 旧址) in the village of Hengkantou横 坎 头村 of the Liangnong (梁弄 镇) municipality are on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .
