The Zönakelkirche ( Dutch Cenakelkerk , "Church of the Cenacle ") with the patronage of St. Anthony of Padua is a Roman Catholic church in the Museum Park Orientalis (formerly Heilig Landstichting ) in the town of Groesbeek at Nijmegen in the Dutch province of Gelderland . It was built from 1913 to 1915 as a neo-Byzantine domed church and has had the status of a Rijksmonuments (No. 523627) since 2004 .

history

The church was created as part of the Holy Land Foundation , which was supposed to make the world of Jesus clear to Dutch Catholics . According to the idea of the initiator, Pastor Arnold Suijs , a visit to the complex should have the character of a pilgrimage and lead to the adoration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . The elevated church served this purpose above all. It was designed by the architect Jan Stuyt in the form of the Christian East , supplemented by a “ western ” two-tower portal system. Piet Gerrits created the mosaics (1920–1923) and the wall paintings (1928–1930).

Building

The concrete church is completely plastered in white. Behind the portal vestibule, flanked by the two slender square bell towers, rises the central building , whose dome vaults a drum 15 meters in diameter. The main room is surrounded by three side chapels on both sides. Behind the domed hall, a long choir with a round apse closes the building.

The mosaics and murals depict scenes from the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles in a style inspired by icon painting .
