The ZIM America class is a series of seven container motor ships from the Israeli shipping company Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM). The lead ship of the ZIM units achieved great fame as Rena after it ran aground on October 5, 2011 en route from Napier to Tauranga on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island on the Astrolabe Reef, about 20 km from Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty .

description

The ship's superstructures are arranged about four fifths of the length aft. The ships have seven holds , six of which are in front of and one behind the deckhouse. The holds are locked by pontoon hatch covers . The container capacity is 2803  TEU , 121 conventional refrigerated containers can be supplied.

The ships received Cegielski-Sulzer main engines of the type 8RTA76. The engine acts directly on a fixed propeller and helps the ships to reach a speed of 21  knots . In addition, it drives a wave generator . The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .

The ships

The basic design was based on the two Hapag-Lloyd ships of the Bonn Express class . The ZIM series began with the ZIM America , followed by the ZIM Canada , ZIM Italia , ZIM Korea , ZIM Japan , ZIM Hong Kong and ZIM Israel . The seven ships of the ZIM America class were built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel and put into operation between 1990 and 1992. They belonged to a series of this type of ship produced between 1989 and 1993, with pre- and replicas , which comprised a total of nineteen units.

The Chinese shipping company COSCO , Min He , Dong He and Gao He , received three similar, but somewhat more conventionally designed ships of the type in 1989/90 . These three ships also received Cegielski / Sulzer main engines. In 1992/93 another series of the shipping companies DSR-Senator and Choyang finally got going : St. Petersburg Senator , Choyang Volga , Hamburg Senator and Sovcomflot Senator . Main engines of the Bremer Vulkan / Sulzer 7 L 80 MC type were installed within this series, which in some cases also had a visually optimized bridge of a different shape and a free-fall lifeboat.
