Zaccaria Pallioppi (* May 2, 1820 in Celerina ; † May 3, 1873 ibid) was a lawyer and linguist of Romansh from the Engadin in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

Life

Zaccaria Pallioppi was born as the son of the lawyer and philologist Jon Pitschen and his wife Chatrina. Zamboni born. When he was eight years old, his father died; nine years later his mother. From 1828 to 1833 Pallioppi attended the Institut à Porta in Ftan , after which he began an apprenticeship as a confectioner in Turin in 1832 . From 1835 to 1841 he attended high school in Chur. He then trained as a lawyer in Chur, Jena and Berlin. During his studies in 1841 he became a member of the Fürstenkeller fraternity in Jena. There he became familiar with the emerging science of Romance studies . In 1844 he finished his studies, he returned to Celerina and became a lawyer and notary. In 1844 he married Ursina Mengia Vicedomini.

Between 1855 and 1857 he was Landammann, 1857-1859 Grisons Grand Councilor and Justice of the Peace. In 1859 he quit public service and devoted himself exclusively to philological studies, especially Ladin . Pallioppi died on May 3, 1873 and was buried on May 5 in the cemetery of the Church of San Gian near Celerina.

In 1857 he founded the Ortografia et ortoëpia del idiom romauntsch d'Engiadin'ota, compiledas per creschieus et scolars pü avanzos, the first generally recognized orthography of the Upper Engadin language. His Conjugazium del verb appeared in 1868. It gave the language of the Upper Engadin a scientific basis and secured it a priority as a written language over other Romansh languages.

His main work, the Dizionari dels idioms romauntschs d'Engiadin'ota e bassa, della Val Müstair, da Bravuogn e Filisur , he began in 1858. He could no longer complete it; Only the very extensive letter A was ready for printing when he died. Detailed drafts of the other letters were available, from which it was evident that Pallioppi understood all Romance and Ladin dialects as an organic unit and, as far as possible, considered them equally.

The Romansh-German edition was completed by his son, Pastor Emil Pallioppi, and published in 1895 in a greatly abridged form that was more practical than scientific. The German-Romance edition appeared in 1902. Each issue has around 900 pages. Another extensive work, the place names and proper names of Raetia remained a manuscript.
