Zacharie Le Rouzic

Zacharie Le Rouzic (born December 24, 1864 in Carnac ; † November 15, 1939 ibid) was a French prehistorian who dealt with the megalithic buildings of France. After him and his colleague James Miln, the museum in Carnac was named Musée de Préhistoire - James Miln - Zacharie Le Rouzic .

Zacharie Le Rouzic came from a large but poor family. He only attended school until he was ten years old, but he met the Scottish archeologist James Miln , who promoted him and through whom he got to know the megalithic buildings of his homeland. When Miln died in 1881, Le Rouzic became the guardian of the Prehistoric Museum of Carnac, later the Musée de Préhistoire - James Miln - Zacharie Le Rouzic . This museum was founded by James Miln's brother Robert Miln. In 1891 Le Rouzic bought his first camera, with which he photographed numerous monuments over the next few decades. The photographs are still an important tool for reconstructing the history of the individual monuments. In 1894 he published an inventory of the house's holdings. In 1910 Le Rouzic was promoted to conservator . In the meantime he had written a number of publications.

In 1926 he bequeathed his private collection to the museum, whereupon the city council decided unanimously on December 19, 1926, after the house had already been named after the Scottish archaeologist, to add the name of the Breton. Le Rouzic ensured that numerous megalithic buildings were entered in the Inventaire des monuments historiques between 1911 and 1938 .

In addition, Le Rouzic worked as a folklorist , concentrating on Brittany . In 1909 he wrote Carnac. Legends, traditions, coutumes et contes du pays . The work, published in 1909, was reprinted in 1912, 1924, 1928 and 1939, then again in 1954 and in 2000 and 2007.
