Zacharie Noterman
Zacharie Noterman (* 1820 in Ghent ; † January 13, 1890 in Paris ) was a Belgian animal painter and etcher. His older brother Emmanuel Noterman (1808–1863) was also an animal painter.
Zacharie Noterman was born the son of a painter and decorator.
The young Zacharie received his first painting lessons from his older brother, who settled in Antwerp in 1835. Noterman continued his art studies in Antwerp at the Académie royale des beaux-arts d'Anvers, where his brother ran a school workshop from 1846.
After graduating, he lived with his brother in Antwerp; later he settled in Paris and stayed there for life. He was best known for his humorous scenes with monkeys taking part in human activities (" Singerie "), as well as for his paintings of dogs and cats. He also painted scenes with animals performing in circuses.
He exhibited his works at the Salon de Paris in 1859, 1861, 1863, 1865, 1866, 1867, 1868, 1869, 1870, 1872, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1884, 1886 and 1887.
