Emmanuel Noterman (born April 1808 in Oudenaarde ; † 14 May 1863 in Antwerp ) was a Belgian animal painter and engraver. His younger brother Zacharie Noterman (1820–1890) also became an animal painter.

Emmanuel Noterman was born the son of a painter and decorator. He was first trained in the craft of gilding. Young Emmanuel received his first painting lessons from his maternal grandfather, Bernard Durieux, lawyer and amateur painter. Noterman continued his art studies at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Gent with Jan Baptist Lodewyck Maes .

He first devoted himself to portrait painting in Grammont , then in Brussels and finally from 1835 in Antwerp , where he turned to painting genre scenes. He was best known for his humorous scenes with monkeys taking part in human activities (" Singerie "), as well as for his paintings of dogs.

Noterman sometimes painted animals in the landscapes of the Antwerp painter François Lamorinière .

In 1846 Noterman ran a student workshop at the Antwerp Academy without being a regular teacher. His students included u. a. François Lamorinière, Ernest Slingeneyer and Jan Stobbaerts and his younger brother Zacharie Noterman.

Like many Antwerp artists, Noterman became a member of the Masonic lodge “La Persévérance”.
