Rack and pinion winch

Rack and pinion winch designed as a universal winch

A rack and pinion winch , also called a stick winch , is a mechanical hoist .

A gear wheel is moved along a rack by means of a crank . The gear is mounted on a sleeve that can slide over the rack. The gear wheel is also mounted on this sleeve so that this sleeve moves in the longitudinal direction when it is turned. If you place this winch between two moving parts, you can push them apart.

So that the load does not push the winch back when the crank is released, a ratchet wheel , which serves as a lock, is installed.

This type of winch is available for various loads from 10 kN (corresponds roughly to the weight of a ton ) up to particularly resilient versions that can apply a force of several hundred kN.

Since this winch is on the one hand very universal and very easy to use and on the other hand takes up little space, it is often used , for example, in disaster control , technical relief organizations and fire services. The best known application is probably the car jack .

In Austria it is often referred to as the southern railway winch , since it actually comes from railway construction .

In northern Germany it is also known as thumb strength.

The workshop of the last winch manufacturer in Switzerland in Wila was taken over by an association in its original condition with transmission drives .
