The ruins of the Zandrypsch Basilica

Zandrypsch ( Abkhazian Цандрыҧшь ; Russian Цандрыпш , formerly Gantiadi ) is a village with 5170 inhabitants in Abkhazia . It is located in the northern part of the country, in Gagra Rajon near the Russian border. Zandrypsch is located on the Black Sea , at the mouth of the Chaschupse River .

The total population in 2011 was 5170, of whom 55.9% were Armenians , 19.6% Abkhazians and 18.4% Russians . Smaller minorities were Ukrainians (1.2%), Georgians (0.9%) and Greeks (0.7%). There are ruins of a basilica in the village.

In ancient times the place was known as Sautschi . The current place name is derived from the Abkhazian noble family Zanba . In 1867 Russian colonists founded a settlement called Pilenkowo near Zandrypsch , which soon merged with the former. The name Pilenkowo was then used for the entire settlement. During the Stalinist era , the village was renamed Gantiadi in 1944 , Georgian for “dawn”. In 1993 it was renamed Zandrypsch.
