Ramsauer Ache in the magic forest

The magic forest is an area on the corridor of Ramsau near Berchtesgaden in the Upper Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria that was created after a landslide .

Characteristic are the rockslide debris that penetrates the forest and creates a romantic atmosphere. The geotope was created around 3500-4000 years ago by a landslide of around 15 million cubic meters from the Blaueistal from the Hochkalter massif . This landslide dammed the Klausbach and streams coming from the north to the Hintersee . The Klausbach is now diverted around the Hintersee and, together with its drain, is called Ramsauer Ache from here .

The magic forest stretches from Hintersee to the east to the Marxenklamm. It covers an area of 0.75 km and is traversed by the Ramsauer Ache. It can be crossed on a hiking trail laid out by the Ramsau Beautification Association in 1896/97. The name magic forest only caught on in the 1920s.

The magic forest has been designated as a particularly valuable geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) (geotope number: 172R009). and awarded the official seal of approval for Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes .
