Zbigniew Oksiuta

Zbigniew Oksiuta (* 1951 in Mulawicze ) is a Polish artist, architect and experimental scientist. He was best known for his living bubbles made of gelatine , which he called Spatium Gelatum , and other works based on different materials such as agar-agar . In his own words, he is working on a vision of a biological habitat .

life and work

Zbigniew Oksiuta was born in Poland and studied architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology from 1970 to 1978 . He then founded the Center for Theater and Environmental Research in Jelenia Góra . In 1981 he went to Germany and studied at the Institute for Art History at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen until 1990.

After completing his studies, Oksiuta presented his works internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions as well as works of art in public spaces. For example, in 2004 he presented his native Poland at the Venice Architecture Biennale with the Spatium Gelatum & Breeding Spaces project . For the constructions made of gelatine, agar-agar and other building materials, Oksiuta works closely with various research institutions, including a. with the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne and the professor for biotechnology at the University of Cologne Hans-Hennig Steinbiß .

Since 2000 Oksiuta has also been a visiting professor at various international universities, including Poland, Germany, Great Britain and the United States. In 2008 he was a visiting artist at the College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University , and since 2010 he has been an assistant professor at the School of Architecture at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , New York .
