Zbigniew Turski
Zbigniew Turski (born October 16, 1908 in Warsaw , Russian Empire , † January 7, 1979 in Otwock ) was a Polish composer and conductor.
Life
Turski studied composition with Piotr Rytel at the Warsaw Conservatory (diploma 1937) and attended the conducting class of Valerian Bierdiajew . From 1936 to 1939 he was music director of Polish Radio in Warsaw. He stayed in his hometown even during the German occupation. Much of his pre-war compositions fell victim to fires during the Warsaw Uprising .
1945-46 he was the organizer, artistic director and conductor of the municipal symphony orchestra in Sopot (later the Baltic Philharmonic ). With Piotr Perkowski he founded the Polish Composers Association in 1946, of which he was president from 1959 to 1960. 1948–49 he also directed the musical subjects at the Warsaw State Theater School .
After 1950 Turski concentrated on composing film and drama music. From 1957 to 1973 he was musical director of the Teatr Współczesny in Warsaw. At the Olympic competition for art and literature at the Olympic Games in London in 1948 , his symphony Olimoijska was awarded the gold medal. He has also received several state awards, including awards from the Ministry of Art and Culture, the President's Prize of the Council of Ministers, and the Polish State Second Degree Prize.
